रोचक संस्कृत - ४

Sanskrit tidbit 4

त्वमेव माता पिता त्वमेव।  त्वमेव बन्धुश्च सखा त्वमेव।

twameve maata ch pita twameve | twameve bandhushch sakha twameve |

त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणं त्वमेव।  त्वमेव सर्वं मम देव देव॥
twameve vidya dravinam twameve | twameve sarvam mum dev dev ||

From what you already know, this should be simple to translate and understand.  “Eva” is difficult to translate.  It only adds emphasis and the meaning varies marginally, depending on context.  This is a prayer to the God of all gods.  You are my mother.  You are also my father.  You are my “bandhu”.  You are also my friend.  You are knowledge.  You are strength (or prosperity).  You are everything.  Notice that I have not translated “bandhu”.  Whenever I ask people what “bandhu” means, they say that it means “friend”.  It does mean friend in Sanskrit, as it does in many Indian languages.  But “sakhaa” also means friend.  If “bandhu” also means friend, then why am I saying “friend” twice?  Words in Sanskrit have multiple meanings and when trying to understand something written in Sanskrit, one should be careful that one has got the right meaning.  Don’t artificially apply a meaning you think is right, without checking it with a dictionary.  The primary meaning of “bandhu” is not friend, but relative, as in blood-relative.  That’s the sense in which one should interpret it here, not in the sense of “friend”.  In the Bhagavad Gita, you won’t find Krishna and Arjuna addressing each other as “bandhu”.  They aren’t blood-relatives.  They address each other as “sakhaa”.  What’s “baandhava”?  Again, “friend” and “relative” are tempting translations that aren’t incorrect.  However, “baandhava” is better translated as a relative with whom one doesn’t have a blood relationship, such as an in-law.  Krishna and Arjuna are “baandhava”s.  “Mitra” is also a friend.  Time to confuse you.

मित्र: मित्रम पश्यति। मित्रम मित्रम पश्यति।
mitrah mitram pashyati | mitram mitram pashyati |

What’s the difference between these two sentences?  The intention was to confuse you and I am certain I have succeeded.  The word “mitra” means sun.  It also means friend.  When it means sun, it is masculine gender, mitrah.  When it means friend, it is neuter gender, mitram.  The first sentence means that the sun is looking at a friend or the sun is looking at another sun, assuming a second sun were to exist.  The second sentence means that a friend is looking at the sun, or at another friend.  Got it?  There is a famous shloka that I am not going to burden you with now.  It says that a “mitram” is someone you work with.  A “sakhaa” is someone you share kinship of heart with, a true friend.  A “bandhu” is someone from whom you cannot bear to be separated.  A “suhrida” is someone who is always devoted to you.  A “baandhava” is someone who accompanies you to the king’s palace and to the cremation-ground (when you are dead).

Kalidasa was a great Sanskrit poet and we will return to Kalidasa’s poetry later.  One of his poems is titled “Raghuvamsha” and is about the lineage of Raghu, Rama’s ancestor.  That is the reason Rama is also known as Raghava.  Raghu’s son was Aja and his queen was Indumati.  When Indumati died, Aja lamented and that lamentation is often cited.  In the first part of this lamentation, Aja describes Indumati as grihini (housewife), sachivah (adviser), sakhi (feminine of sakhaa) and mitah (mitram).

Back to words and their meanings.  I have given you an image and it is one that all of you will be able to identify.  It is an image of the Bhagavad Gita and we have Krishna and Arjuna on the chariot.  Can you detect anything wrong in this picture?  Arjuna had several names and one of these was Savyasachi.  When I ask people why Arjuna was called Savyasachi, they invariably say this was because he was ambidextrous.  “Savya” actually means left and Arjuna was known as Savyasachi because he was left-handed.  The Mahabharata doesn’t tell us that he was ambidextrous.  That’s a deduced or derived meaning.  Therefore, contrary to every depiction that you see of Arjuna, the bow should be held in the right hand and he should be taking the arrow out with the left.  “Asavya” or “dakshina” means right.  And “dakshina” also means south.  In many societies and cultures, the left side is inauspicious.  Take the word “sinister” for example.  It means inauspicious.  But it originally meant the left-side.  Have you done a “pradakshina” of temples?  Why do we do this clock-wise?  Why not counter clock-wise?  If you do it clock-wise, the deity will always be on your right.  If you do it counter clock-wise, the deity will be on your left.

The word “vaam” means left and the word “vaamaa” means lady or wife.  But do not take this to mean that a woman in inauspicious.  Look at all the images of Shiva-Parvati that you can find.  Or Lakshmi-Narayana.  You will always find Parvati to Shiva’s left and Lakshmi to Narayana’s left.  There is one exception though.  Sometimes, there are depictions of Shiva and Parvati’s marriage.  In those cases, you will find Parvati to Shiva’s right before the marriage and to Shiva’s left after the marriage.  Therefore, by looking at the image, you will be able to determine whether the marriage has happened or not.  Next time you have a picture taken, be careful, depending on whether it is a spouse or a girl friend/boy friend.

Sanskrit is rich in words and vocabulary.  But there are some English words for which a satisfactory Sanskrit term is difficult to find.  Take “boredom”.  It is difficult to find a good Sanskrit term for boredom.  You will find a word like “avinoda”, but that’s an approximation.  It is not quite boredom.  You will never be bored in Sanskrit.

By the end of this course, you should be able to read the Bhagavad Gita (BG) in Sanskrit on your own.  You won’t be able to understand everything, because in addition to Sanskrit, you need to know some concepts.  However, with a dictionary to help, you shouldn’t have any problems with the Sanskrit of BG.  Try it out just now.  Check out 1.31, 6.37, 11.32 and 13.28 and see it you can identify the verb and the subject.  The first number refers to the chapter number and the second number to the shloka number.  You won’t understand much else of the shlokas yet.  But the fact that you understand some parts in Sanskrit should give you confidence.

Sanskrit tidbit 3

Some of you may know that I am translating the Mahabharata in unabridged form, from Sanskrit to English.  Some of the action of the Mahabharata takes place in Hastinapura (Hastinaapura), the capital of the Kuru dynasty.  Hastinapura is roughly 40 km away from Meerut.  It is a real place.  There is a belief that the city owed its name to a king named Hasti, but there is another explanation too.  The word “hastin” means elephant.  “Pura” means city.  Therefore, there must have been a lot of elephants in Hastinapura, for the city to have obtained that name.  At the time of the Mahabharata, elephants were used quite a lot, including in the Kurukshetra War.  The word “naga” (naaga) has several meanings and one of these is elephant.  The word “gaja” also means elephant.  “Sahvya” (saahvya) is not a common Sanskrit word. You won’t find it in any of the standard dictionaries.  However, “sahva” means “called” or “named”.  Most people have heard of Hastinapura.  Unless you have read the Mahabharata very carefully, you may not know the Mahabharata also refers to Hastinapura as Nagasahvya and Gajasahvya.  Nagasahvya and Gajasahvya simply meant places named after elephants and the words are synonyms for Hastinapura.  The word “varana” (vaarana) also means elephant and in some rare instances, Hastinapura is also called Varanasahvya.

There is someone named Abhinav Agarwal.  He is a very serious and careful reader of the Mahabharata and that applies to my translation too.  However, he reads it in the English translation, not the Sanskrit.  Abhinav asked me a question.  Why does the Mahabharata refer to Hastinapura as Nagasahvya and Gajasahvya and why does it never refer to the city as Nagapura or Gajapura?  Nagapura and Gajapura are also logical names.  By the way, Abhinav is factually correct.  The words Nagapura and Gajapura are never used.  The question stumped me.  I had never thought about it.  Having thought about it, I got the answer.  Or at least, I think I have.  But before giving you the answer, I need to digress.

रामो राजमणिः सदा विजयते रामं रमेशं भजे

raamo raajmanih sadaa vijayate ramam ramesham bhaje |

रामेणाभिहता निशाचरचमू रामाय तस्मै नमः

raamenabhihtaa nishaacharchamu ramay tasmay namah ||

रामान्नास्ति परायणं परतरं रामस्य दासोऽस्म्यहम्
ramannasti paraynam partaram ramasya daasosmyaham |
रामे चित्तलयः सदा भवतु मे भो राम मामुद्धर
rame chittalayah sadaa bhavatu me bho raam maamuddhar ||

What I have given you above is a small part from the “Sri Rama Raksha Stotram”, believed to have been composed by the sage Budha Koushika.  It is a prayer to Rama.  Since you still don’t know sandhi and how to break up words, this may seem difficult to understand.  But you will get the sense.  Let’s take it bit by bit.  Rama, a jewel (mani) among kings, is always victorious.  I worship Rama Ramesha.  Why is Rama also Ramesha?  Rama is an incarnation of Vishnu.  Ramaa is Lakshi, Vishnu’s consort.  Therefore, Ramesha, Ramaa’s lord, is Vishnu, or Rama.  Nishaacharas are those who wander around (chara) in the night (nishaa) and Rama destroyed their army (chamu).  I am bowing down before Rama.  There is no refuge or resort (paraayana) superior (paratara) to Rama.  I am Rama’s servant (daasa).  May my mind (chitta) always (sadaa) be dissolved in Rama.  Oh, Rama!  Save me. Taken bit by bit, it should be clear now.

Sanskrit is deceptive.  Sanskrit poets were clever and there is always something hidden somewhere.  Appearances are deceptive and it’s a bit like an onion with several layers.  Having understood the prayer, let’s take a closer look.  If you want, take out the vibhakti table for the masculine gender (Rama) and focus only on the singular.  Forget the dual and the plural.  Now blank out everything else and look at the terms in the prayer that have Raama.  There is Raamah, Raamam, Raamena, Raamaaya, Raamat, Raamasya, Raame and Raama.  In that prayer, the poet has given you the masculine gender (actually the “a”-kaaraanta type) singular vibhakti table.  Poetry and prayers are easier to remember.  Perhaps this is a way for you to remember the vibhakti table too.

There is a very rich tradition of Sanskrit prosody (cchanda).  In a more advanced blog, we will revisit it and you will find the binomial theorem, Pascal’s triangle and even the Fibonacci series in such texts.  For the moment, there is a notion of syllable (akshara) and syllables are laghu (light) or guru (heavy).  Let’s call these L and G.  There are rules on how syllables are formed.  For example, no syllable should have more than one vowel.  If that vowel is a, i, u, r or l, the syllable is L.  Otherwise, it is G.  A syllable with aa will be G and so on.  You won’t yet be able to break up poetry into syllables.  Be patient and wait for that expertise.  But you should be able to understand what I am doing.  Let me now break up the first line of the prayer into syllables, as shown below.  As G and L, the structure is GGG LLG LGL LLG GGL GGL and G.  (In analysis and discussion of Sankrit prosody, the convention is to cluster the syllables into groups of 3, GGG, LLG and so on.)  There are 19 syllables in this first line.  But the point is this.  If I analyze any of the other lines, even from parts of the Sri Rama Raksha Stotram that I have not reproduced, you will always find 19 syllables.  And the pattern will always be GGG LLG LGL LLG GGL GGL G.  Depending `on how the G-s and L-s are chosen, I have different kinds of metres.  This particular one is called “shardulavikridita” or tiger’s play.  If I am a good poet, once I have picked a metre, I must stick with it throughout the poem, even if I am composing an extremely long poem.

raa mah raa ja ma nih sa daa vi ja ye te raa mam ra me sham bha je

Let’s get back to Hastinapura, Nagasahvya and Nagapura.  Syllable-wise, the structure of Nagapura is GLL-L.  The structure of Hastinapura is GLG-LL and the structure of Nagasahvya GLG-LL.  Nagapura is a synonym for Hastinapura in meaning.  It is not a synonym for Hastinapura in structure of syllables.  Using Nagapura or Gajapura would have broken the metre.  Use of Nagasahvya or Gajasahvya retains the metre.  I am not a great Sanskrit scholar, but I think I have the right answer.  Isn’t there great beauty in this?

====================================================
